Facilitators To Participation

Facilitators to participation are the individual, social, organizational, and practical conditions that enable people to take part in medical care, research, or health-related programs. They work by reducing barriers through clear information, respectful communication, trust, accessible scheduling and transportation, appropriate accommodations, and shared decision-making, allowing individuals to make informed choices and remain engaged. In medicine, identifying these facilitators can improve recruitment and retention in clinical studies, strengthen adherence to treatment and follow-up, and promote more equitable access to care. Their systematic use also helps researchers and clinicians design services that reflect patients’ needs, preferences, and circumstances.

Electrophysiological research is an important tool for identifying biomarkers of developmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), but data collection in these populations remains challenging. This work presents a familiarization protocol to accompany research that includes electroencephalography (EEG) to improve the likelihood of collecting EEG data from children with ASD.

In behavioral finance, pension participant behavior refers to the psychological influences shaping individuals' retirement savings decisions. These behaviors can significantly impact long-term financial security and are often driven by cognitive biases and decision-making heuristics.Status Quo Bias in Pension DecisionsOne of pension participation's most prevalent behavioral tendencies is the status quo bias. This cognitive bias leads individuals to prefer existing conditions over making active...

Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled. Can you think of an example in which having an audience could improve performance? One common example is sports. Skilled basketball players will be...

Facilitated Diffusion

2024

The plasma membrane, a critical structure in cellular biology, houses an array of transporters, or carrier proteins, interspersed within its lipid bilayer. These proteins play a crucial role in solute transport through facilitated diffusion, a form of passive diffusion that uses transporters to move the molecules across the membrane. In this process, substrates such as organic compounds and ions interact with a transporter on one side, triggering conformational changes in proteins that enable...

Facilitated Transport

2026

The chemical and physical properties of plasma membranes cause them to be selectively permeable. Since plasma membranes have both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions, substances need to be able to transverse both regions. The hydrophobic area of membranes repels substances such as charged ions. Therefore, such substances need special membrane proteins to cross a membrane successfully. In facilitated transport, also known as facilitated diffusion, molecules and ions travel across a membrane via...
