Genetic Risk Stratification

Genetic risk stratification is the process of estimating and grouping people according to their likelihood of developing a disease or experiencing a health outcome based on inherited genetic information. It typically combines disease-associated variants, their effect sizes, and sometimes family history within statistical models; polygenic risk scores can summarize the cumulative contribution of many variants into an individual risk estimate. In medicine, genetic risk stratification can support earlier or more tailored screening, prevention, and treatment decisions while helping researchers investigate disease mechanisms and differences in treatment response.

This manuscript describes how to implement a psychophysiological interaction analysis to reveal task-dependent changes in functional connectivity between a selected seed region and voxels in other regions of the brain. Psychophysiological interaction analysis is a popular method to examine task effects on brain connectivity, distinct from traditional univariate activation effects.

An Overview of Genetics and Disease

2023

Many human diseases are associated with mutations or variations in genetic sequences. Some of these genetic variants are heritable, passed down from generation to generation, while others arise sporadically during an organism’s life and cause diseases such as cancer. Researchers are trying to identify and characterize these genetic alterations in the hopes of improving diagnosis and therapeutic options for patients. In this video, we will examine the history of genetic disease research, and...

An Overview of Genetic Engineering

2023

Genetic engineering – the process of purposefully altering an organism’s DNA – has been used to create powerful research tools and model organisms, and has also seen many agricultural applications. However, in order to engineer traits to tackle complex agricultural problems such as stress tolerance, or to realize the promise of gene therapy for treating human diseases, further advances in the field are still needed. Important considerations include the safe and efficient delivery of genetic...

2010

Genetic associations often remain unexplained at a functional level. This method aims to assess the effect of phenotype-associated genetic markers on gene expression by analyzing cells heterozygous for transcribed SNPs. The technology allows accurate measurement by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to quantify allele-specific primer extension products.
