Infarct Volume Measurement

Infarct volume measurement is the quantitative estimation of tissue damaged by interrupted blood flow, providing an objective indicator of lesion extent and disease severity. It typically involves identifying infarcted regions on imaging or tissue sections, delineating their boundaries, and calculating volume from measured areas across serial slices or three-dimensional datasets. In medicine, this assessment supports diagnosis, treatment planning, prognosis, and research by enabling comparisons over time, between patients, or across experimental interventions.

2023

Solutions are utilized to some degree in almost all biological research applications. Therefore understanding how to measure and manipulate them is imperative to any experiment. In this video, concepts in preparing solutions are introduced. Solutions consist of a solute dissolved in solvent to yield a homogeneous mixture of molecular substances. Solutions are generally identified by their components and corresponding concentrations. Concentrated solutions are diluted through various...

2016

Myocardial infarction (MI) is not only followed by impaired cardiac function but also by apoptosis in the amygdala, a brain region involved in the behavioral consequences of MI. This protocol describes how to induce MI, collect amygdala tissue and measure caspase-3 activity, a marker of apoptosis, therein.

This video demonstrates the assessment of the infarct zone and brain edema in brain slices from rats subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion. Infarcted areas are identified using redox staining, while a blue filter and threshold function in image analysis software quantify the infarct zone and edema in the affected hemisphere.
