Isokinetic Dynamometer

An isokinetic dynamometer is a specialized instrument that measures muscle performance while a joint moves at a controlled, preset angular velocity. During testing, the device provides accommodating resistance, adjusting the opposing load to match the force produced throughout the range of motion, while recording torque, work, power, and endurance. In medicine and sports rehabilitation, clinicians use these measurements to quantify strength deficits, compare limbs, evaluate neuromuscular function, and monitor recovery after injury or surgery. By providing objective, reproducible data under standardized conditions, isokinetic dynamometry supports individualized rehabilitation planning and helps assess treatment outcomes.

Construction of Constant-Load (Isotonic) and Constant-Velocity (Isokinetic) Torque-Velocity-Power Profiles In vivo for the Rat Plantar Flexors

2025

Here, we present a novel protocol to non-invasively measure the torque-angular velocity-power relationship in vivo in rat plantar flexors using transcutaneous muscle stimulation. This setup enables simple testing of isotonic muscle contractions on a force transducer/length controller system to better represent the constant-load nature of everyday movements.

Using a robotic isokinetic device with electromyography (EMG) measurements, this protocol illustrates that isokinetic motion itself can improve inter-rater reliability for the angle of catch measurements in stroke patients with mild elbow flexor spasticity.

Improving Strength, Power, Muscle Aerobic Capacity, and Glucose Tolerance through Short-term Progressive Strength Training Among Elderly People

2017

The effect of short-term resistance training on elderly people was investigated through the simultaneous use of several methods. Compared to a control group, many improvements were seen, including on muscle aerobic capacity, glucose tolerance, strength, power, and muscle quality (i.e., protein involved in cell signaling and muscle fiber type composition).
