Neurological Function Recovery

Neurological function recovery is the restoration or improvement of movement, sensation, cognition, communication, or other nervous-system abilities after injury, disease, or surgery. It occurs through interacting processes that can include neuroplasticity, in which surviving neural circuits adapt their connections and activity, alongside rehabilitation-driven practice and compensation for impaired functions. In medicine, recovery assessment guides individualized physical, occupational, speech, and cognitive therapies, while functional measures help clinicians track progress and refine care. Understanding these mechanisms supports better prognostic tools, rehabilitation strategies, and research into therapies for stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and neurodegenerative disease.

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are neural crest cells which allow growth of the primary olfactory neurons. This specific property can be used for cellular transplantation. We present here a model of cellular transplantation based on the use of OECs in a laryngeal nerve injury model.

Contrast enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging allows comprehensive in vivo assessment of the heart in small animal models of cardiovascular disease. Here we detail the procedures to perform CMR imaging, reconstruction and analysis using Small Animal Lock-Locker Inversion Recovery (SALLI) in rats.
