Non-invasive Cardiac Monitoring

Non-invasive cardiac monitoring comprises external methods for assessing heart rate, rhythm, electrical activity, and circulation without inserting instruments into the body, supporting safe and repeatable clinical evaluation. Devices such as electrocardiographic electrodes, wearable photoplethysmography sensors, blood-pressure cuffs, and ultrasound systems detect electrical signals, changes in blood volume, arterial pressure, or cardiac motion, which clinicians and algorithms analyze to characterize cardiovascular function. In medicine, these approaches help identify arrhythmias, track physiological changes, evaluate treatment responses, and support long-term monitoring outside the hospital. Their accessibility and low procedural risk also advance remote care, continuous health surveillance, and individualized cardiovascular management.

Non-invasive Monitoring and Imaging in Animal Research

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Non-invasive technologies support the principles of 3Rs by enabling repeated data collection from the same animal without the need for euthanasia at multiple time points. These approaches reduce the number of animals required...

We describe the protocol to perform a cardiac stress test induced by dobutamine and monitored by cardiac catheterization in normal mice. Also we show its application to unmask subclinical cardiac disease in high fat diet-induced obese mice.

Assessing Bacterial Invasion of Cardiac Cells in Culture and Heart Colonization in Infected Mice Using Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes causes fetal infections in pregnant women and meningitis in susceptible populations. Subpopulations of bacteria can colonize cardiac tissue, causing myocarditis in patients and laboratory animals. Here we present a protocol that describes how to assess L. monocytogenes cardiac cell invasion in vitro and cardiac colonization in infected animals.

Fecal Glucocorticoid Analysis: Non-invasive Adrenal Monitoring in Equids

Adrenal activity can be assessed in the equine species by analysis of feces for corticosterone metabolites. The method offers a non-invasive option to assess long term patterns in both domestic and free ranging horses. This protocol describes the enzyme linked immunoassay involved and the associated biochemical validation.

The aim is to promote a new approach to cardiac rehabilitation (CR), using a unique remote patient monitoring system that will enable healthcare providers to monitor CR patients at home at low cost, with the intention of making CR services more accessible and improving compliance. The study is currently underway.
