Podocyte Marker Proteins

Podocyte marker proteins are molecules used to identify podocytes, specialized epithelial cells that wrap around glomerular capillaries and help maintain the kidney’s filtration barrier. These proteins include nephrin and podocin at the slit diaphragm, synaptopodin in the actin cytoskeleton, and WT1 in the nucleus, where their distribution and expression reflect podocyte structure and differentiation. Detecting these markers with immunostaining, immunoblotting, or gene-expression methods helps researchers assess podocyte development, injury, loss, and altered filtration-barrier function. In medicine, podocyte marker proteins support the study and diagnosis of glomerular diseases, including proteinuric disorders, and aid evaluation of experimental therapies targeting kidney damage.

Changes in the intracellular calcium levels in the podocytes are one of the most important means to control the filtration function of glomeruli. Here we explain a high-throughput approach that allows detection of real-time calcium handling and single ion channels activity in the podocytes of the freshly isolated glomeruli.
