Porcine Adhesion Model

A porcine adhesion model is an experimental surgical model that uses pigs to reproduce and study postoperative adhesions, fibrous bands that can form between injured tissues or organs. Researchers create a controlled abdominal injury or surgical procedure, after which inflammation, fibrin deposition, and insufficient fibrinolysis can promote collagen-rich scar formation and persistent tissue connections. The model supports assessment of adhesion severity, healing responses, and the effectiveness and safety of barrier materials, drugs, and surgical techniques designed to prevent adhesion formation. Because porcine anatomy and wound-healing processes share important features with human surgery, these studies help advance translational research in medicine.

Adhesion

Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules. Capillary action is a result of water’s adhesive tendencies. When a narrow glass...

Source: Calatayud Arroyo, M., et al. Assessing the Viability of a Synthetic Bacterial Consortium on the In Vitro Gut Host-microbe Interface. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates an in vitro gut host–microbe model to study bacterial viability. A co-culture of Caco-2 and HT29-MTX cells is incubated with bacteria pre-treated under simulated digestive conditions. Epithelial barrier integrity is assessed using transepithelial electrical resistance, and fractions from the medium, solubilized...
