Psoas Muscle

The psoas muscle is a deep skeletal muscle that connects the lumbar spine to the femur and plays a central role in hip movement, posture, and trunk stability. Working with the iliacus as the iliopsoas, it contracts to flex the hip, assist external rotation, and stabilize the lumbar spine during walking, lifting, and other movements. In medicine, assessing psoas strength, flexibility, and tenderness can help evaluate low back pain, hip disorders, muscle imbalance, and functional limitations. Imaging, physical examination, and targeted rehabilitation may identify strain or shortening and guide treatment, including therapeutic exercise, mobility training, and movement-focused care.

Posterior Approach for Debridement of the Psoas Abscess

2020

This is a cadaveric study investigating the landmarks for the posterior approach for irrigation and debridement of the psoas abscess. The interval between the transverse processes (TP) was used to access the substance of the psoas muscle.

Ex Vivo Assessment of Contractility, Fatigability and Alternans in Isolated Skeletal Muscles

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.

Changes in limb muscle contractile and passive mechanical properties are important biomarkers for muscle diseases. This manuscript describes physiological assays to measure these properties in the murine extensor digitorum longus and tibialis anterior muscles.

Surgical Approach and Complications of Stand-alone Lateral Trans-Psoas Interbody Fusion

2025

Interbody fusion of the lumbar spine can be achieved surgically using different techniques. Minimally invasive techniques, including lateral interbody fusion, have been developed within recent decades to reduce rates of complications and allow for quicker patient recovery. We provide insight into stand-alone lateral trans-psoas interbody fusion, highlighting potential complications and pitfalls.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials in Mouse Forelimb Muscles In Vivo

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique for measuring compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in mice. It outlines the steps for setting up electrodes, stimulating forelimb neurons that innervate muscle fibers, and recording muscle responses. The technique assesses neuronal demyelination and functional neuron loss.
