Rat Tibia Model

The rat tibia model is an experimental research system that uses the tibia of rats to study bone biology, injury, disease, and treatment responses in a living organism. Researchers create standardized conditions, such as bone defects, fractures, or implanted materials, then monitor healing through imaging, histological analysis, and biomechanical testing. This model supports investigation of inflammation, bone regeneration, osteoporosis, fracture repair, and the performance of orthopedic devices or therapies. Because the tibia is accessible and its healing response can be measured over time, the model helps connect cellular and tissue-level findings with functional outcomes before advancing medical approaches toward clinical research.

Bones of the Lower Limb: Tibia and Fibula

2025

The tibia is the main weight-bearing bone of the lower leg. It is larger than the fibula with which it is paired. The tibia is also the second longest bone in the body and is located right below the skin. The proximal end of the tibia forms the medial and the lateral condyle, which articulates with the condyles of the femur to form the knee joint. Between the articulating surfaces is the irregular elevated area known as the intercondylar eminence that serves as the inferior attachment point for...

In this video, we demonstrate the isolation and culture of bone marrow stromal cells from the long bones of mice. The isolated adherent BMSCs can be used for further analysis.

Rat Hindlimb Below-Knee Amputation Model and Immediate Targeted Muscle Reinnervation
