Scleral Flap Creation

Scleral flap creation is an ophthalmic surgical technique that forms a partial-thickness, hinged flap in the sclera to provide controlled access to and drainage from the anterior chamber. During procedures such as trabeculectomy, the surgeon dissects a superficial scleral flap, creates an internal filtration pathway, and secures the flap with sutures that regulate aqueous humor outflow. This controlled drainage lowers intraocular pressure and helps protect the optic nerve in patients with glaucoma. Proper flap thickness, size, positioning, and watertight closure influence filtration, wound healing, and the risk of complications, making the technique central to glaucoma surgery and related studies of ocular fluid dynamics.

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.
