Ultrasound Assessment

Ultrasound assessment is a noninvasive imaging approach that uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate the structure and function of tissues, organs, and developing anatomy. A transducer sends sound pulses into the body and receives returning echoes; differences in echo timing and intensity are processed into images, while Doppler methods assess blood flow and its direction. In medicine, ultrasound assessment supports diagnosis, monitoring, and image-guided procedures across obstetrics, cardiology, emergency care, and abdominal and vascular evaluation. Because it provides real-time imaging without ionizing radiation, it is valuable for repeated examinations and bedside decision-making.

Ultrasound imaging can be used to display the shape and movements of the tongue in real time during speech. The images can be used to determine the nature of speech sound errors. Visual feedback of the tongue can be used to facilitate improvements in speech sound production in clinical populations.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

The development of new ultrasound (US) probes based on Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (CMUT) technology requires an early realistic assessment of imaging capabilities. We describe a repeatable experimental protocol for US image acquisition and comparison with magnetic resonance images, using an ex vivo bovine brain as an imaging target.
