Vacuum Sealing Drainage

Vacuum sealing drainage is a wound-management technique that uses controlled negative pressure to support the treatment of complex or infected wounds. A porous dressing and drainage tube are sealed over the wound, allowing suction to remove exudate, reduce fluid accumulation, and maintain a controlled local environment. By promoting wound contraction and supporting the formation of healthy granulation tissue, the method can help prepare wounds for closure or reconstruction. In medicine, vacuum sealing drainage is applied in postoperative care, trauma management, and soft-tissue infection treatment, where effective drainage and ongoing wound monitoring are clinically important.

The present protocol describes the maceration and cleaning of cadaveric bone with a vacuum-sealed, hot water bath immersion technique. This is a low-cost, safe, and effective method to produce anatomical specimens for surgical planning and medical education as an alternative to three-dimensional (3D) printed models.

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.

Acid Mine Drainage

Mining activities that disturb sulfide-rich rocks, particularly those containing pyrite (FeS₂), initiate a cascade of geochemical and microbiological processes with serious environmental implications. When exposed to air and water, pyrite undergoes oxidation, releasing sulfate, ultimately forming sulfuric acid and mobilizing heavy metals into surrounding water systems. This phenomenon, known as acid mine drainage (AMD), results in low pH waters laden with toxic elements that threaten aquatic...
