Gastrectomy Complications

Gastrectomy complications are adverse events that can occur after partial or total surgical removal of the stomach, ranging from immediate postoperative problems to long-term digestive and nutritional effects. They may arise from tissue injury, impaired blood supply, infection, or leakage at a gastrointestinal anastomosis, while loss of gastric capacity can accelerate food passage and reduce nutrient absorption. Important complications include bleeding, infection, anastomotic leak, bowel obstruction, dumping syndrome, weight loss, and deficiencies of iron or vitamin B12. Recognizing these risks supports perioperative monitoring, timely intervention, nutritional management, and informed follow-up for patients undergoing gastrectomy for cancer or other gastric disorders.

Complications during healing arise when tissue repair is altered by local or systemic factors. These changes involve abnormal collagen deposition, altered biomechanics, and reduced vascular supply, impairing restoration of normal structure and function.Loss of FunctionScar tissue differs significantly from the original tissue it replaces. In the skin, fibrosis lacks adnexal structures such as hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands. Their absence reduces tactile sensitivity, impairs...

DialyzersA hemodialysis (HD) dialyzer is a plastic cartridge containing thousands of parallel hollow fibers, which serve as semipermeable membranes. These fibers are typically made from cellulose-based or other synthetic materials. During HD, blood is pumped into the top of the cartridge and distributed among these fibers. Simultaneously, dialysis fluid, known as dialysate, is introduced into the bottom of the cartridge, bathing the outside of the fibers. Across the semipermeable membrane,...
