Water Swallowing Test

The Water Swallowing Test is a bedside screening assessment used to identify possible oropharyngeal dysphagia, a condition that can impair safe movement of liquids from the mouth to the esophagus. During the test, a person drinks a measured amount of water while a clinician observes swallowing performance and signs such as coughing, choking, a wet voice, or difficulty managing the bolus. These findings may indicate impaired airway protection or coordination and help determine whether further evaluation is needed. In medicine, the test supports rapid assessment of swallowing safety, particularly after stroke, neurological injury, or other conditions associated with aspiration risk.

2014

Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.

2025

The Barium Swallow Study, or a Barium Esophagogram, is a diagnostic imaging method used to visualize the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. It employs barium sulfate, a radiopaque contrast material, to provide clear images of the upper digestive system, helping to identify abnormalities, diseases, or structural issues. Purpose and Procedure Patients undergoing this procedure ingest a liquid containing barium sulfate with a chalky...

States of Water

2019

Water exists in any one of the three classical states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam or water vapor). The state of water depends on i) the intermolecular forces that draw molecules together and ii) the kinetic energy that leads to movements that pull them apart. Water freezes when the intermolecular forces are greater than the kinetic energy. Unlike most other substances, water is less dense in its solid state than in its liquid state. This is because each water molecule can form...
