Blood Clotting Prevention

Blood clotting prevention refers to strategies that reduce abnormal thrombus formation while preserving the body’s essential ability to stop bleeding. These approaches work by limiting platelet activation, interrupting coagulation factors that generate fibrin, or reducing blood-flow stasis, depending on the medication or intervention used. In neuroscience, clot prevention is important because clots can block cerebral blood vessels and cause ischemic stroke, while clotting risks also arise during prolonged immobility, surgery, and certain vascular disorders. Understanding antiplatelet and anticoagulant mechanisms supports safer stroke prevention, treatment planning, and research into therapies that balance protection from thrombosis with the risk of bleeding.

Inducing Blood Clot Formation in the Mouse Brain Using a Photosensitive Dye

Source: Talley Watts, L., et al. Rose Bengal Photothrombosis by Confocal Optical Imaging In Vivo: A Model of Single Vessel Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates a technique to induce blood clot formation in a mouse brain. An anesthetized mouse with a cranial window and a thinned skull undergoes photothrombosis through the activation of a photosensitive dye using high-intensity light. This process generates reactive oxygen species, which damage the vessel walls and trigger clot...

UV-Visible Spectroscopy for Monitoring Fibrin Clot Formation

2025

This video demonstrates the use of a UV-visible spectrophotometer for monitoring insoluble fibrin clot formation as a function of the change in the solution turbidity. The UV-visible spectrophotometer measures the solution’s absorbance over time, which represents the turbidity change due to the insoluble fibrin clot formation.

We present an in vitro vascular disease model to investigate whole blood interactions with patient-derived endothelium. This system allows the study of thrombogenic properties of primary endothelial cells under various circumstances. The method is especially suited to evaluate in situ thrombogenicity and anticoagulation therapy during different phases of coagulation.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Blood collection is a common requirement for research studies that involve mice and rats. The method of blood withdrawal in mice and rats is dependent upon the volume of blood needed, the frequency of the sampling, the health status of the animal to be bled, and the skill level of the technician. All methods discussed-retro-orbital sinus bleeds, initial tail snip bleeds, and intracardiac...
