Channel Splitting

Channel splitting is the division of a neural signal or information pathway into separate, parallel channels so distinct features can be processed independently. In neuroscience, this separation may use differences in frequency, spatial origin, sensory modality, or response properties to route components into specialized circuits while preserving their timing and information content. Channel splitting helps explain how nervous systems organize complex inputs, including sensory signals, and how neural recordings can distinguish overlapping activity patterns. Studying this process supports research on neural coding, circuit connectivity, sensory integration, and disorders in which normally distinct information streams become poorly segregated.

2013

Dual camera emission splitting systems for two-color fluorescence microscopy generate real-time image sequences with exceptional optical and temporal resolution, a requirement of certain live cell assays including parallel plate flow chamber adhesion assays. When software is employed to merge images from simultaneously acquired emission channels, pseudocolored image sequences are produced.

The Split Brain

2023

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California The study of how damage to the brain affects cognitive functioning has historically been one of the most important tools for cognitive neuroscience. While the brain is one of the most well protected parts of the body, there are many events that can affect the functioning of the brain. Vascular issues, tumors, degenerative diseases, infections, blunt force traumas, and neurosurgery are just some of the...

Stock Split

2025

A stock split is a corporate action aimed at increasing the number of a company's shares by dividing its existing shares into multiple new ones. This adjustment reduces the per-share price without altering the company's overall market capitalization, thereby making shares more affordable to investors and enhancing trading flexibility. Stock splits are often employed by companies whose stock prices have risen significantly, making their shares less accessible to retail investors. Lowering the...

Ion Channels

2019

The movement of ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium into and out of the cell is essential to maintain the electrochemical gradient in living cells. The ion channels—a class of membrane transport proteins—help maintain this ionic gradient for the smooth functioning of physiological activities such as maintaining cell size and volume, conducting nerve impulses, and gas and nutrient exchange. Ion channels are specialized integral membrane proteins on the plasma membrane that allow specific...

This video demonstrates how to maintain the growth of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) in feeder cell-free conditions and how to continuously passage hESCs in feeder cell-free conditions. Confirmation of hESC pluripotency grown in feeder cell-free conditions by immunofluorescence microscopy is also demonstrated. Part 2 of 3.
