Contrast Sensitivity Measurement

Contrast sensitivity measurement is a psychophysical method for assessing how well the visual system detects differences in luminance between an object and its background, providing information that visual acuity alone may miss. During testing, observers identify patterns such as gratings presented at controlled contrast levels and spatial frequencies, while the contrast threshold for detection is recorded to estimate sensitivity across the contrast sensitivity function. In neuroscience, these measurements help characterize processing in the retina, visual pathways, and visual cortex. They support research on visual perception and the effects of neurological or ocular disorders, aging, and therapeutic interventions.
