Epithelial Volt Meter

An Epithelial Volt Meter is a tool for measuring the transepithelial electrical potential generated across a polarized epithelial layer, providing a readout of ion transport and barrier function. Epithelial cells establish electrochemical gradients through coordinated activity of ion channels, transporters, and pumps; electrodes placed on opposite sides of the tissue detect the resulting voltage under controlled conditions. In neuroscience, this measurement helps characterize neuroepithelial models, including sensory and fluid-regulating epithelia, by revealing changes in cellular transport, tight-junction integrity, and tissue polarization. The resulting data support studies of epithelial physiology, disease mechanisms, and how epithelial barriers interact with neural systems.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Zhongqi He - United States Department of Agriculture Acids and bases are substances capable of donating protons (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-), respectively. They are two extremes that describe chemicals. Mixing acids and bases can cancel out or neutralize their extreme effects. A substance that is neither acidic nor basic is neutral. The values of proton concentration ([H+]) for most solutions are inconveniently small and difficult to compare so that a more practical...
