Luxol Fast Blue

Luxol Fast Blue is a histological stain that selectively colors myelin, the lipid-rich insulating sheath surrounding many axons, making it important for visualizing white matter in neuroscience. The copper phthalocyanine dye binds to myelin lipoproteins, and controlled differentiation with lithium carbonate and ethanol removes excess stain from gray matter while preserving the blue signal in myelinated fibers. Researchers use Luxol Fast Blue to map brain and spinal cord anatomy, assess myelin integrity, and identify demyelination or white-matter loss in conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Combined with counterstains, it also supports detailed interpretation of neuronal tissue organization and neuropathological changes.

We present a method to isolate rapid (microsecond) calcium events from slower fluxes in living cells using laser scanning confocal microscopy. The method measures fluorescence intensity fluctuations of calcium indicators by recording line scans of several hundred pixels in a cell. Histogram analysis allows us to isolate the time scales of different calcium fluxes.

The preparation and exfoliation of CaCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 are described. Upon stirring in hot water, CaCuSi4O10 spontaneously exfoliates into monolayers, whereas BaCuSi4O10 requires ultrasonication in organic solvents. Near infrared (NIR) imaging illustrates the NIR emission properties of these materials, and aqueous dispersions of these nanomaterials are useful for solution processing.

Fast Reactions

2026

Fast reactions occurring in times shorter than the time needed to mix reactants pose a unique challenge for investigation. In a liquid-phase continuous-flow system, reactants A and B are swiftly pushed into the mixing chamber, where mixing occurs within 1 ms. The reaction mixture then flows through an observation tube, and one measures light absorption to determine species concentrations at various points of the tube. This method is most appropriate when relatively large volumes of reactants...

Fast Fourier Transform

2024

The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is a computational algorithm designed to compute the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) efficiently. By breaking down the calculations into smaller, manageable sections, the FFT significantly reduces the computational complexity involved. Direct computation of an N-point DFT requires N2 complex multiplications, whereas the FFT algorithm needs only (N/2)log⁡2N multiplications, offering a much faster performance. The computational efficiency of the FFT becomes...
