Nerve Signal Monitoring

Nerve signal monitoring is the measurement and analysis of electrical activity that carries information through neurons and peripheral nerves, providing a window into nervous system function. Recording electrodes detect voltage changes produced when ion channels open and close during action potentials, while signal-processing methods distinguish neural activity from background noise and movement artifacts. In neuroscience, these measurements help characterize sensory and motor pathways, assess nerve conduction, and investigate disorders that disrupt communication between the brain, spinal cord, and body. Nerve signal monitoring also supports neuroprosthetic development, brain-computer interfaces, and objective evaluation of treatment responses.

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of electrical signals from the afferent neurons in a paralyzed zebrafish larva by positioning a micropipette near the lateral line ganglion and forming a loose seal for signal capture. The extracellular solution maintains neuronal viability during this process.

This manuscript provides an innovative method for developing a biologic peripheral nerve interface termed the Muscle Cuff Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (MC-RPNI). This surgical construct can amplify its associated peripheral nerve's motor efferent signals to facilitate accurate detection of motor intent and the potential control of exoskeleton devices.

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) microscopy is a powerful technique for real-time monitoring of signaling events in live cells using various biosensors as reporters. Here we describe how to build a customized epifluorescence FRET imaging system from commercially available components and how to use it for FRET experiments.
