Neural Population Variability

Neural population variability is the structured fluctuation in activity across groups of neurons, both from trial to trial and between behavioral or physiological states. It arises from intrinsic cellular dynamics, synaptic input, network connectivity, and shared changes in brain state, producing correlated patterns that can influence how populations represent information. Neuroscientists quantify this variability using measures such as firing-rate distributions, noise correlations, and population activity trajectories in electrophysiological or imaging data. Studying these patterns helps distinguish meaningful neural signals from background fluctuations, clarify how the brain encodes sensory and cognitive variables, and explain changes associated with learning, behavior, development, and neurological disorders.

Exponential Population Growth Model ExpandNOTE: In these experiments you will use computer software to simulate different types of growth models. HYPOTHESES: The experimental hypothesis might be that if we increase either R, the reproductive rate or the initial population size, NT, that this will increase the population size after 10 generations in an exponential growth model compared to unmanipulated control populations. The null hypothesis may be that populations of different R and initial...

Population Models An ecological population is a group of individuals of a single species living in an area at the same time. To persist, a population must either grow or maintain its size. Population ecology is the study of how population size and age distribution change over time through interactions with other species and the environment as well as with individuals of their own species. A particularly important feature that is studied by ecologists is the rate at which a population grows or...

Neural stem cells (NSCs) refer to cells which can self-renew and differentiate into the three neural lineages. Here, we describe a protocol to determine NSC frequency in a given cell population using neurosphere formation and differentiation under clonal conditions.
