Noninvasive Brain Modulation

Noninvasive brain modulation is a group of techniques that alter neural activity without surgery or implanted devices, making it valuable for studying brain function and developing therapeutic interventions. Methods such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) use changing magnetic fields to induce electrical currents in cortical tissue, while transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) delivers weak electrical current through scalp electrodes; stimulation parameters influence neuronal excitability and network activity. In neuroscience, these approaches help researchers test causal links between brain regions and behavior, investigate disorders, and evaluate treatments for conditions including depression, pain, and movement disorders. Their reversibility and relatively low burden also support repeated experimental and clinical use.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

2025

Source: Lauer, S. M., et al. Visualization of Cortical Modules in Flattened Mammalian Cortices. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) This video demonstrates a method to visualize the cortical modules in flattened brain sections using histochemical staining. Pre-fixed sections are treated with a straining reagent that highlights active neural clusters, forming dark, high-contrast regions. After mounting and dehydration, cortical modules appear under a bright-field microscope as dark, patchy patterns.

Source: Zhan, J., et al. Non-invasive Strategies for Chronic Manipulation of DREADD-controlled Neuronal Activity. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a non-invasive ophthalmic drug delivery method for targeted neuromodulation. The drug is delivered via eye drops, absorbed into the circulation, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and activates specific neuronal receptors.
