Photo Excitation

Photoexcitation is the process by which a molecule absorbs light energy and moves from a lower-energy state to an excited state, providing a foundation for optical measurements and control in neuroscience. When photons of an appropriate wavelength are absorbed, their energy promotes electrons to higher energy levels; subsequent relaxation can produce fluorescence or trigger a biological response. In neural research, photoexcitation enables fluorescence microscopy, calcium imaging, and the activation of light-sensitive opsins in optogenetics. These applications allow researchers to visualize neural activity, manipulate defined cell populations, and link circuit function with behavior.
