Pediatric Neuroimaging

Pediatric neuroimaging is the use of imaging methods to visualize the developing brain and nervous system, supporting diagnosis and research across childhood. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to produce detailed structural images without ionizing radiation, whereas computed tomography (CT) uses x-rays for rapid assessment of acute injury, bleeding, and bone abnormalities; diffusion and functional MRI provide complementary information about tissue organization and brain activity. These approaches help clinicians evaluate congenital abnormalities, tumors, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, trauma, and developmental disorders, while age-appropriate protocols and motion control improve image quality and patient care.

Despite an increase in the use of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans, the study of young pediatric populations remains a challenge. We present a hands-on, step-by-step video protocol including guidelines for clinicians and researchers intending to perform (f)MRI in young children.

The current article describes the basics of multivariate analysis and contrasts it to the more commonly used voxel-wise univariate analysis. Both types of analysis are applied to a clinical-neuroscience data set. Supplementary split-half simulations show better replication of the multivariate results in independent data sets.

2016

High Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have emerged as presurgical biomarkers for the identification of the epileptogenic zone in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. A methodology for the noninvasive recording, detection, and localization of HFOs with simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented.

Evaluating the Effects of Different Polishing Methods on Color Stability of Dental Restorations in Pediatric Dentistry
