Rat Hippocampal Neurons

Rat hippocampal neurons are nerve cells from the hippocampus of rats, a brain region central to learning, memory, and spatial processing. In culture or tissue preparations, these neurons communicate through electrical activity and neurotransmitter release at synapses, while activity-dependent changes in synaptic strength support neural plasticity. Researchers use rat hippocampal neurons to examine neuronal development, axon and dendrite formation, synaptic transmission, and mechanisms of learning and memory. They also provide experimental models for studying neurotoxicity, neurodegenerative disease, and the effects of drugs or other treatments on neuronal function.

This article describes a working protocol to image dendritic spines from hippocampal neurons in vitro using Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM). Super-resolution microscopy using SIM provides image resolution significantly beyond the light diffraction limit in all three spatial dimensions, allowing the imaging of individual dendritic spines with improved detail.
