Response Time

Response time is the interval between the presentation of a stimulus and the initiation or completion of a behavioral response, making it a useful measure of processing speed and performance. In neuroscience, it reflects the combined time required for sensory detection, neural signal transmission, decision-making, and motor execution, and can vary with stimulus complexity, attention, practice, and fatigue. Researchers measure response time with reaction-time tasks to study perception, cognition, and motor control, while clinicians use changes in response time to assess cognitive function and nervous-system performance. Comparing response times across conditions can reveal how the brain processes information and adapts to competing demands.

Conventional computer hardware can not generate visual stimuli with sufficiently high grayscale resolution and measure response times with sufficient accuracy. We describe how to use the VideoSwitcher to produce high-resolution monochromatic displays, and the RTbox to measure response times with high accuracy on conventional computer hardware.

We detail a simple method to produce high-resolution time-lapse movies of Pseudomonas aeruginosa swarms that respond to bacteriophage (phage) and antibiotic stress using a flatbed document scanner. This procedure is a fast and simple method for monitoring swarming dynamics and may be adapted to study the motility and growth of other bacterial species.
