Starvation Condition Testing

Starvation condition testing is an experimental approach that examines how cells, tissues, or organisms respond to limited access to essential nutrients, making it useful for studying metabolic stress in neuroscience. Researchers create controlled nutrient-deprivation conditions and compare neural activity, cellular metabolism, survival, or stress responses with those observed under nutrient-replete conditions. In neural systems, this approach can reveal how energy shortages affect neuronal function, synaptic signaling, and interactions between neurons and supporting glial cells. The resulting data help clarify mechanisms of metabolic vulnerability and may inform research on brain development, neurodegeneration, and cellular adaptation to changing nutritional environments.

2016

The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum undergoes a developmental transition into a multicellular organism when starved. The evolutionary conserved protein coronin A plays a crucial role in the initiation of development. Using aggregation assays as our main method, we aim to elucidate the role of coronin A in early development.

Metabolic States of the Body: Fasting and Starvation

2024

During the initial hours of fasting, the body uses up its glycogen stores as an energy source. Once these glycogen reserves are depleted, the body begins breaking down stored triglycerides and structural proteins. During this stage, glycerol becomes a key substrate for gluconeogenesis, while free fatty acids undergo beta-oxidation to provide energy for tissues, such as skeletal muscle. In the fasting state, the body spares protein breakdown as much as possible to conserve muscle and structural...
