Stroke Recovery

Stroke recovery is the process by which a person regains movement, sensation, communication, cognition, or independence after brain injury caused by interrupted blood flow or bleeding. It depends on spontaneous biological repair and neuroplasticity, in which surviving neural networks reorganize and strengthen through repeated, task-specific practice, while rehabilitation addresses impairments and supports adaptive strategies. In neuroscience, studying stroke recovery helps researchers link changes in brain structure and function to clinical outcomes and refine physical, occupational, speech, and cognitive therapies. Recovery can continue for months or years, although its pace and extent vary with lesion location, severity, health, and access to rehabilitation.

Theta-Burst Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to Promote Stroke Recovery in Rats

Take a rat with a focal ischemic stroke in the brain cortex, resulting in a compromised BBB, reduced blood flow, and excessive neuronal activity.Stroke also induces astrocyte activation, leading to the formation of neurotoxic astrocytes that release pro-inflammatory cytokines. This triggers neuroinflammation, leading to neuronal and endothelial cell degeneration.Restrain the rat and position the rTMS coil over the ischemic region.Administer theta-burst rTMS for several days. The electromagnetic...

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.
