Operating Otoscope

An operating otoscope is a specialized instrument that provides illuminated, magnified access to the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane while allowing clinicians to perform procedures. It uses a speculum and optical system to maintain a clear line of sight, and its working channel can accommodate instruments for tasks such as foreign-body removal, suction, or targeted medication application. In pharmacology and clinical practice, this visualization helps guide topical ear-drug delivery, assess treatment-related changes, and reduce the risk of canal or tympanic-membrane injury. Operating otoscopy therefore supports precise diagnosis, local therapy, and evaluation of treatment outcomes in ear disorders.

2014

We have developed a simple, reliable, and relatively inexpensive method for endotracheal intubation in mice via direct laryngoscopy using an otoscope with a 2.0 mm speculum. This technique is atraumatic and can be used for repeated measurements in chronic experiments. We find it superior to tracheostomy or previously reported nonsurgical techniques.

2023

Robert M Rioux, Ajay Sathe, Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA A glovebox is an isolated enclosure that is designed to maintain an inert atmosphere. The manipulation of chemicals or apparatus is done via the use of gloves, which allow operation while still maintaining an inert atmosphere. A positive pressure is utilized to compensate for any passive leaks. Objects can be transferred in and out of the box using an antechamber that acts as an airlock between the box...

Improved Methodology for Liquid Delivery to the Mouse Lung: Intubation using a Consumer Otoscope

2025

This protocol presents how optimally positioning a mouse and inserting a camera-based otoscope transorally enables visualization of the glottis, rapid intubation with minimal tissue trauma, and consistent liquid delivery to the lungs.

In this protocol we describe a method of operant learning using sensory stimuli as a reinforcer in the mouse. It requires no prior training or food restriction, and it allows the study of motivated behavior without the use of a pharmacological or natural reinforcer such as food.
