Wright Dust Feed

Wright Dust Feed is a laboratory aerosol-generation apparatus used to deliver controlled quantities of dry particulate material for pharmacological and inhalation studies. The device meters powdered material from a feed reservoir into a moving air stream, dispersing it as a respirable dust cloud whose concentration and exposure duration can be regulated. This controlled delivery system supports experimental evaluation of inhaled drugs, respiratory responses, and the effects of particulate exposure in laboratory models. By improving consistency in aerosol administration, Wright Dust Feed helps researchers relate an administered powder dose to observed pharmacological or toxicological outcomes.

We present a technique to achieve low-velocity to intermediate-velocity collisions between fragile dust aggregates in the laboratory. For this purpose, two vacuum drop-tower setups have been developed that allow collision velocities between <0.01 and ~10 m/sec. The collision events are recorded by high-speed imaging.

Experimental Methods of Dust Charging and Mobilization on Surfaces with Exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation or Plasmas

Dust charging and mobilization is demonstrated in three experiments with exposure to thermal plasma with beam electrons, beam electrons only, or ultraviolet (UV) radiation only. These experiments present the advanced understanding of electrostatic dust transport and its role in shaping the surfaces of airless planetary bodies.

Zebrafish are emerging as a valuable model of dietary lipid processing and metabolic disease. Described are protocols of lipid-rich larval feeds, live imaging of dietary fluorescent lipid analogs, and quantification of food intake. These techniques can be applied to a variety of screening, imaging, and hypothesis driven inquiry techniques.
