Psychiatric Disorders

Psychiatric disorders are clinically significant conditions that affect mood, thought, perception, behavior, or social functioning, making them important targets for diagnosis and treatment. In pharmacology, medications act on neural signaling by binding neurotransmitter receptors or altering neurotransmitter reuptake, release, or breakdown, thereby modifying activity in brain circuits associated with symptoms. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and mood stabilizers are used to manage conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and bipolar disorder. Studying these mechanisms helps researchers link drug actions to therapeutic effects, understand adverse reactions, and improve treatment strategies for complex disorders.

Developing a Behavioral Box for Assessing Prepulse Inhibition and Neural Activity in Psychiatric Animal Models

2025

This protocol presents a microcontroller-based behavioral box to assess prepulse inhibition (PPI) by collecting acceleration data from a sensor beneath the box. This data evaluates sensory gating deficits in socially isolated rats, with an added method for synchronizing data with neuronal activity to advance neurophysiology studies on behavioral disorders.

A Multiple Integrated Social Stress Model for Psychiatric Disorders in Female C57BL/6J Mice

2025

By integrating four daily social stressors, the present study describes a multiple integrated social stress (MISS) model for psychiatric disorders in female C57BL/6J mice. After ten days of repeated MISS exposure, the mice developed depressive- and anxiety-like phenotypes, thus providing a natural, etiology-based animal model for studying psychiatric disorders in female subjects.

Using a Murine Model of Psychosocial Stress in Pregnancy as a Translationally Relevant Paradigm for Psychiatric Disorders in Mothers and Infants

2021

The chronic psychosocial stress (CGS) paradigm employs clinically relevant stressors during pregnancy in mice to model psychiatric disorders of mothers and infants. Here, we provide a step-by-step procedure of applying the CGS paradigm and downstream assessments to validate this model.

Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

2020

Intrinsically disordered proteins are a group of proteins that do not fold into specific three-dimensional structures. Their structural flexibility allows them to complement ordered proteins to perform functions that are inaccessible to rigid structures. They are more common in eukaryotes than prokaryotes and may either be exclusively intrinsically disordered or hybrid proteins, consisting of a mix of ordered and disordered regions. The absence of a rigid structure in these proteins can be...
