Therapeutic Strategies

Therapeutic strategies are planned approaches for preventing, managing, or treating disease, and pharmacology evaluates how medicines can achieve these goals safely and effectively. They work by matching drug properties and mechanisms, such as receptor activation or blockade, enzyme inhibition, and modulation of signaling pathways, with disease biology, while pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles guide dose, timing, and treatment duration. These strategies support drug selection, combination therapy, personalized treatment, and monitoring of efficacy and adverse effects. Understanding their benefits and limitations helps researchers and clinicians improve clinical outcomes, address treatment resistance, and develop more precise therapies.

2013

We describe the method of programming stem cells to overexpress therapeutic factors for angiogenesis using biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles. Processes described include polymer synthesis, transfecting adipose-derived stem cells in vitro, and validating the efficacy of programmed stem cells to promote angiogenesis in a murine hindlimb ischemia model.

New Variations for Strategy Set-shifting in the Rat

Set-shifting, a form of behavioral flexibility, requires an attentional shift from one stimulus dimension to another. We extended an established rodent set-shifting task1 by requiring attention to different stimuli according to context. The task was combined with specific lesions to identify neuron subtypes underlying a successful shift.

Therapeutic Index

2025

The therapeutic index of a drug is a key parameter in pharmacology that quantifies the relative safety of a drug by calculating the ratio between the dose that causes toxicity in half the population (50%) to the dose that proves to be effective for half the population (50%). It provides a spectrum of doses for a particular drug ranging from effective to potentially toxic. To illustrate, consider an anticoagulant agent like warfarin. It possesses a narrow window within its therapeutic index to...
