Equatorial Bulge

The equatorial bulge is the outward widening of a rotating astronomical body around its equator, making the body slightly oblate rather than perfectly spherical. Rotation produces a centrifugal effect that opposes gravity most strongly at the equator, allowing material there to remain farther from the rotation axis; in fluid-like bodies, this effect shapes the equilibrium surface. Earth’s equatorial radius exceeds its polar radius by about 21 kilometers, influencing surface gravity, sea-level models, geodesy, and satellite motion. Studying the equatorial bulge helps physicists understand planetary interiors, rotational dynamics, and how mass distribution affects gravitational fields.

Multipotency and Niche of Bulge Stem Cell

A hair follicle or HF is a small part of the skin that produces the hair shaft. Paul Gerson Unna was the first to observe a bulge in the human hair follicle's outer root sheath (ORS). The bulge is present between the sebaceous gland and the arrector pili muscle and is the niche for hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs). The bulge is also a niche for melanocyte stem cells, and their loss results in graying of hair. The HFSCs express Sox9 and Lhx2, which help them maintain stemness and prevent...

VSEPR Theory and the Effect of Lone Pairs

Effect of Lone Pairs of Electrons on Molecule Geometry It is important to note that electron-pair geometry around a central atom is not the same thing as its molecular structure. Molecular structure describes the location of the atoms, not the electrons. The geometry that includes all electron pairs is the electron-pair geometry. The electron-pair geometries describe all regions where electrons are located, bonds as well as lone pairs. The structure that includes only the placement of the...

Overview of VSEPR Theory Valence shell electron-pair repulsion theory (VSEPR theory) enables us to predict the molecular structure, including approximate bond angles around a central atom, of a molecule from an examination of the number of bonds and lone electron pairs in its Lewis structure. The VSEPR model assumes that electron pairs in the valence shell of a central atom will adopt an arrangement that minimizes repulsions between these electron pairs by maximizing the distance between them.

Age-related increases in eye lens stiffness are linked to presbyopia. This protocol describes a simple, cost-effective method for measuring mouse lens stiffness. Mouse lenses, like human lenses, become stiffer with age. This method is precise and can be adapted for lenses from larger animals.

Here we show our method to isolate mouse epidermal neural crest stem cells (EPI-NCSC). Technique involves micro-dissecting whisker follicles, isolating the bulge and placeing it into tissue culture. EPI-NCSC start to emigrate from bulge explants onto the substratum within 3 - 4 days.
