Through-hole Array

A through-hole array is a regular pattern of openings that extends completely through a solid substrate, providing a controlled way to guide, divide, or transmit physical quantities. Its behavior depends on aperture diameter, spacing or pitch, substrate thickness, and alignment, which together determine transmission, collimation, spatial resolution, and interactions with particles, radiation, or fluids. In physics, through-hole arrays support beam shaping, detector masks, experimental apertures, and microfabricated devices. By tailoring the array geometry, researchers can control transport and measurement conditions, create repeatable spatial patterns, and investigate how structure influences the propagation of matter, energy, or fields.

Fabrication of a Master Mold for Microneedles with a Micron-sized Air-vent Hole

2025

This article introduces a unique method for fabricating master molds with an air-vent hole to prevent air entrapment during viscous polymer casting, enabling the fabrication of gelatin microneedles with sharp tips. By reducing the casting volume of high-viscosity gelatin, thin-walled hollow pyramidal microneedles could also be fabricated.

Detection of Black Holes

2023

Although black holes were theoretically postulated in the 1920s, they remained outside the domain of observational astronomy until the 1970s. Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light. Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...

We developed and validated a small-footprint array of miniature chemostats built from readily available parts for low cost. Physiological and experimental evolution results were similar to larger volume chemostats. The ministat array provides a compact, inexpensive, and accessible platform for traditional chemostat experiments, functional genomics, and chemical screening applications.
