Commitment Consistency

Commitment consistency is a psychological principle describing people’s tendency to align their later attitudes and behavior with previous choices, statements, or commitments. Once individuals make a commitment, especially publicly or in writing, they may reinterpret new information and adjust their actions to preserve a coherent self-image, often reducing discomfort from cognitive dissonance. Researchers study this process through methods such as the foot-in-the-door paradigm, in which a small initial request increases the likelihood of agreeing to a larger one later. The principle helps explain persistence, attitude change, compliance, and decision-making in social, organizational, health, and consumer settings.

In game theory, a credible commitment in sequential games is a strategy where a player influences another's decision by making a believable and enforceable promise or threat. Sequential games differ from simultaneous games as players act after observing the decision of another player, allowing the first player to shape the expectations and actions of the second. For such a commitment to be credible, it must be realistic and enforceable, ensuring both sides see cooperation as the most beneficial...

Commitment is the process whereby stem cells: lose their ability to form all cell types and irreversibly change into a specific type. The multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, (HSCs), differentiate into the multipotent hematopoietic progenitor cells, (HPCs). The HPCs express many lineage-specific cytokine receptors. Each of these receptors binds specific cytokines, activates distinct signaling pathways, and expresses a particular gene set. The HPCs further differentiate to form committed...

The fate of an individual embryonic cell can be influenced by inherited molecules and/or by signals from neighboring cells. Utilizing fate maps of the cleavage stage Xenopus embryo, single blastomeres can be identified for culture in isolation to assess the contributions of inherited molecules versus cell-cell interactions.
