Single Trial Learning

Single-trial learning is the formation of a lasting association or behavioral change after only one experience, demonstrating how quickly learning can occur in psychology. It typically arises when a salient event links a stimulus with an outcome, allowing the brain to encode and later retrieve that relationship without repeated practice; conditioned taste aversion is a classic example. Researchers use single-trial learning to study attention, memory consolidation, reinforcement, and the conditions that make experiences especially memorable. Understanding this process helps explain rapid adaptation, emotional learning, and why a single rewarding or harmful event can strongly influence future behavior.

Learning new stimulus-response associations engages a wide range of neural processes which are ultimately reflected in changing spike output of individual neurons. Here we describe a behavioral protocol allowing for the continuous registration of single-neuron activity while animals acquire, extinguish, and reacquire a conditioned response within a single experimental session.

Visual Statistical Learning

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The visual environment contains massive amounts of information involving the relations between objects in space and time; certain objects are more likely to appear in the vicinity of other objects. Learning these regularities can support a wide array of visual processing, including object recognition. Unsurprisingly, then, humans appear to learn these regularities automatically, quickly, and without conscious awareness. The name...

Single-Port Robotic-assisted Transaxillary Breast-conserving Surgery: A Prospective, Single-arm, Non-randomized Phase IIa Clinical Trial

2025

This prospective study evaluated the implementation of a novel, single-port, robotic platform in oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery for malignant lesions. The primary endpoint focused on technical success, defined as the achievement of tumor-free resection margins confirmed by intraoperative frozen-section histopathology, with secondary assessment of aesthetic outcomes and life quality score of patients.

The Open-field Tower Maze (OFTM) is a maze created to study the behavioral and neural mechanisms of spatial learning (e.g., place- or response-learning) in rats. This maze is especially useful for experimenters who want to use a non-stressful maze paradigm to investigate spatial learning in their research.
