<h4>Descripción general</h4> Los anticuerpos, también conocidos como inmunoglobulinas (Ig), son actores esenciales del sistema inmunológico adaptativo. En los mamíferos, los anticuerpos se dividen en cinco clases diferentes, cada una de las cuales provoca una respuesta biológica diferente al unirse al antígeno. <h4>La estructura en forma de Y de los anticuerpos está formada por cuatro cadenas polipeptídicas</h4> Los anticuerpos constan de cuatro cadenas polipeptídicas: dos cadenas pesadas idénticas de aproximadamente 440 aminoácidos cada una y dos cadenas ligeras idénticas compuestas de aproximadamente 220 aminoácidos cada una. Estas cadenas están dispuestas en una estructura en forma de Y que se mantiene unida mediante una combinación de enlaces disulfuro covalentes y enlaces no covalentes. La IgA se presenta como un dímero cuando se secreta y como un monómero en los fluidos corporales. Los monómeros de la clase IgM son los primeros en aparecer en las células B vírgenes. Las IgM son la clase principal de anticuerpos secretados por las células B en respuesta a la primera exposición a un antígeno, la respuesta primaria de anticuerpos. Antibodies are built from heavy and light chains that work together to form a Y-shaped molecule. These chains give the antibody its basic structure and help it bind to specific targets.

The two upper arms of the Y contain the variable regions, which differ from one antibody to another. These variable regions help determine which antigen, or foreign molecule, the antibody can recognize.

The lower part of the antibody is the constant region. This region is more similar across antibodies and helps define the antibody class. The structure of the chains also supports the antibody’s overall shape and function.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism.
