Structural Protein Function

Las proteínas estructurales son una clase de proteínas que apoyan la forma y el movimiento de las células. Fuera de la célula, estas proteínas están presentes en partes estructurales del cuerpo, como huesos, cartílagos y piel. 
El colágeno, la proteína más abundante en los mamíferos, es una proteína estructural que se encuentra en todo el cuerpo en la matriz extracelular. 
Esta proteína se enrolla en una triple hélice que se polimeriza en fibrillas alargadas, que luego se ensamblan en fibras más grandes. Entre sus muchas funciones estructurales, contribuye a la formación de células y tejidos.
El citoesqueleto está compuesto predominantemente por proteínas estructurales y forma el marco básico de una célula. Contiene tres tipos principales de filamentos: microfilamentos, filamentos intermedios y microtúbulos.
La actina es una proteína estructural que forma los microfilamentos. Esta proteína se autopolimeriza en filamentos y contribuye a la forma, organización, movimiento y división de las células.

Las proteínas estructurales son una categoría de proteínas responsables de funciones que van desde la forma y el movimiento de las células hasta proporcionar soporte a estructuras importantes como huesos, cartílagos, cabello y músculos. Este grupo incluye proteínas como el colágeno, la actina, la miosina y la queratina.

El colágeno, la proteína más abundante en los mamíferos, se encuentra en todo el cuerpo. En el tejido conectivo, como la piel, los ligamentos y los tendones, proporciona resistencia a la tracción y elasticidad. En huesos y dientes se mineraliza para formar tejidos duros y contribuye a su capacidad de carga. Además del soporte estructural, el colágeno también puede interactuar con los receptores de la superficie celular y otras moléculas intermedias para regular los procesos celulares, como el crecimiento y la migración, que implican cambios en la forma de las células y los tejidos.

Las proteínas estructurales forman la estructura básica del citoesqueleto celular. Structural proteins give cells and tissues shape, support, and strength. They help build bones, cartilage, hair, and muscles. Important examples include collagen, actin, myosin, and keratin.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals. It is found throughout the body. In skin, ligaments, and tendons, collagen adds tensile strength and elasticity. In bones and teeth, it helps form hard, load-bearing tissue through mineralization.

Collagen also does more than provide support. It can interact with cell surface receptors and other molecules to help control cellular processes. These processes include growth and migration, which involve changes in cell and tissue shape.

Structural proteins also form the cell cytoskeleton, which is the internal framework of the cell. The cytoskeleton contains three kinds of filaments: microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules. Each filament type is built from different structural proteins.

Microfilaments form when actin self-polymerizes into long, repeating strands. These actin filaments help maintain cell shape and organization. They also work with myosin to support cell movement and cell division.

Intermediate filaments vary by cell type. Around 70 different genes code for these proteins. Epithelial cells contain keratin, peripheral neurons contain peripherin, and muscle cell sarcomeres contain desmin. Their main role is to reinforce cells and organize them into tissues.

Microtubules are made of tubulin proteins. Tubulins self-assemble into structures that help organize the cytoplasm and position organelles. Microtubules are also essential for mitosis and cell division. Because structural proteins are so widespread, mutations in their genes can cause serious effects. For example, collagen gene mutations can lead to osteogenesis imperfecta, which causes weak bones and connective tissue deformities, or Alport syndrome, which affects the kidneys, eyes, and ears.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins. Portions of DNA are involved in regulating the expression of genes or affect the structure of the chromosomes (replication origin, centromeres, and telomeres).
