Temperature and Thermal Equilibrium

La temperatura es la medida del calor o frío de un cuerpo, y se puede registrar con un termómetro.
El cuerpo más caliente tiene una temperatura más alta, mientras que el más frío tiene una temperatura más baja.
Por ejemplo, el agua hirviendo se siente caliente ya que tiene una temperatura más alta que el agua fría.
Si se mezclan agua fría y caliente, el calor se transferirá del agua caliente al agua fría hasta que su temperatura sea igual.
Después de alcanzar una temperatura uniforme, la transferencia de calor se detendrá y se dice que el agua está en equilibrio térmico.
Si el agua tibia se coloca dentro de un refrigerador, se enfriará hasta que alcance la temperatura del refrigerador.
Por lo tanto, el equilibrio térmico es la condición cuando no hay más transferencia de calor entre dos sistemas conectados.
Si un cuerpo está separado del otro sistema por algún aislante, retrasará el proceso de equilibrio térmico.

No siempre es fácil distinguir entre calor y temperatura. El concepto de temperatura ha evolucionado de los conceptos comunes de caliente y frío. La definición científica de temperatura explica más que solo nuestra sensación de calor y frío. La temperatura se define operacionalmente como la magnitud medida con un termómetro. Además, la temperatura es proporcional a la energía cinética translacional promedio, lo que proporciona una definición más física. Las diferencias de temperatura mantienen la transferencia de calor en todo el universo. La transferencia de calor es el movimiento de energía de un lugar o material a otro como resultado de una diferencia de temperatura. La transferencia de calor puede cambiar la temperatura y afectará desde el comportamiento de átomos y moléculas, hasta la cocina, hasta el clima en la Tierra y hasta los ciclos de vida de las estrellas. Heat and temperature are key ideas in thermodynamics and in everyday life. People often connect temperature with hot and cold, but science gives it a more precise meaning. Temperature is the quantity measured with a thermometer. It is also linked to the average translational kinetic energy of particles.

Heat is different from temperature. Heat is energy that moves from one place or material to another because there is a difference in temperature. That difference in temperature keeps heat flowing throughout the universe. When heat is transferred, it can change temperature and affect matter in many settings.

These ideas help explain the behavior of atoms and molecules. They also appear in cooking, in Earth’s weather, and in the life cycles of stars. People can feel heat entering the body from the summer Sun or from hot coffee or tea after a winter stroll. People can also feel heat leaving the body from the chill of the night or from the cooling effect of sweat after exercise.
