Thermal Expansion

Thermal expansion is the expansion in matter with increased temperature; it occurs in all three phases of matter.
If an object is heated, the kinetic energy of the molecules increases, resulting in a greater average distance between the molecules. Consequently, the object expands.
There are three categories of thermal expansion: Linear, areal, and volume.
Solids undergo all three types of expansion, while liquids and gases exhibit only volume expansion.
Linear expansion is the change in length of a substance by applying temperature, proportional to the initial length and change in temperature. The proportionality constant is the coefficient of linear expansion.
Similarly, areal expansion is the change in area of a body when heated. The proportionality constant is the coefficient of areal expansion.
Further, volume expansion is the change in volume of a body when heat is applied. Here, the proportionality constant is the coefficient of volume expansion.
An exception to this is water; water expands when decreasing the temperature between 4 and 0 degrees Celsius, as its density is highest at 4 degrees Celsius.

The expansion of alcohol in a thermometer is one of many commonly encountered examples of thermal expansion, which is the change in size or volume of a given system as its temperature changes. The most visible example is the expansion of hot air. When air is heated, it expands and becomes less dense than the surrounding air, which then exerts an upward force on the hot air to, for example, make steam and smoke rise, and hot air balloons float. The same behavior happens in all liquids and gases, driving natural heat transfer upward in homes, oceans, and weather systems. Solids also undergo thermal expansion. Railroad tracks and bridges, for example, have expansion joints to allow them to freely expand and contract with temperature changes.
Water is the most important exception to this phenomenon. Whilst water does expand with increasing temperature (its density decreases) at temperatures greater than 4 &#176;C (40 &#176;F), it is densest at +4 &#176;C, and also expands with decreasing temperature between +4 &#176;C and 0 &#176;C (40 &#176;F and 32 &#176;F). A striking effect of this phenomenon is the freezing of water in a pond. When water near the surface cools down to 4 &#176;C, it is denser than the remaining water and thus sinks to the bottom. This &#8220;turnover&#8221; leaves a layer of warmer water near the surface, which is then cooled. However, if the temperature in the surface layer drops below 4 &#176;C, that water is less dense than the water below and thus stays near the top. As a result, the pond surface can freeze over. The layer of ice insulates the liquid water below it from low air temperatures. Fish and other aquatic life can survive in 4 &#176;C water beneath the ice, due to this unusual characteristic of water.

Thermal expansion is the change in size or volume of a material as its temperature changes. A common example is the alcohol inside a thermometer. As the temperature rises, the alcohol expands and shows the change.

Heated air also expands. It becomes less dense than the cooler air around it, so the surrounding air pushes it upward. This is why steam and smoke rise and why hot air balloons float. The same effect happens in liquids and gases, and it helps move heat upward in homes, oceans, and weather systems.

Solids expand too. Railroad tracks and bridges use expansion joints so they can expand and contract safely as temperatures change. Water behaves differently from most substances. Above 4 °C, it expands as it warms and its density decreases. But water is densest at 4 °C, and between 4 °C and 0 °C it also expands as it cools.

This unusual behavior helps explain why ponds freeze from the top down. Water near the surface cools to 4 °C, becomes denser, and sinks. That turnover continues until the surface water drops below 4 °C. Then it stays on top, freezes, and forms an ice layer that insulates the water below. Fish and other aquatic life can survive in the 4 °C water under the ice.
