Gas Thermometers and the Kelvin Scale

A gas thermometer evaluates temperature based on changes in pressure or volume of the gas-filled.
There are two types of gas thermometers: constant-volume, and constant-pressure, and the constant-volume gas thermometer is the most widely used.
The principle of this thermometer is that, at constant volume, the pressure of a gas increases as temperature increases.
To calibrate the gas thermometer, the pressure at 0 and 100 degrees Celsius is measured.
These values are plotted in a straight line, which is extrapolated to find the zero-pressure temperature.
This temperature is the zero point of the Kelvin scale. This is the standard scale for temperature, as the SI unit of temperature is Kelvin.
Absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature that ideally reflects the utter absence of thermal energy.
On the Kelvin scale, the freezing point of water is 273.15, while the boiling point is 373.15. The difference is the same as on the Celsius scale; only the zero point is different.
Thus, the relationship between Kelvin and Celsius scales can easily be established.

The definition of temperature in terms of molecular motion suggests that there should be a lowest possible temperature, where the average kinetic energy of molecules is zero (or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics). Experiments confirm the existence of such a temperature, called absolute zero. An absolute temperature scale is one whose zero point is absolute zero. Such scales are convenient in science because several physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly related to absolute temperature.
The Kelvin scale is the absolute temperature scale that is commonly used in science.
The Kelvin scale is part of the SI system of units, so its actual definition is more complicated than the one given above. First, it is not defined in terms of the freezing and boiling points of water, but in terms of the triple point. The triple point is the unique combination of temperature and pressure at which ice, liquid water, and water vapor can coexist stably. The triple-point temperature is defined as 273.16 K. This definition has the advantage that although the freezing temperature and boiling temperature of water depend on pressure, there is only one triple-point temperature.
Even with well-defined points on the scale, different thermometers give somewhat different results for other temperatures. Therefore, a standard thermometer is required. Metrologists have chosen the constant-volume gas thermometer for this purpose. A vessel of constant volume filled with gas is subjected to temperature changes, and the measured temperature is proportional to the change in pressure. The results depend somewhat on the choice of gas, but the less dense the gas in the bulb, the better the results for different gases agree. If the results are extrapolated to zero density, the results agree quite well, with zero pressure corresponding to a temperature of absolute zero. Constant-volume gas thermometers are big and come to equilibrium slowly, so they are used mostly as standards to calibrate other thermometers.

Kelvin temperature is the absolute scale used in science, and it starts at absolute zero. That zero point matches the lowest possible temperature, where molecular motion reaches zero or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics. Scientists use this scale because some physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, depend directly on absolute temperature.

The Kelvin scale is part of the SI system of units, so its definition is more precise than simply using water’s freezing and boiling points. Instead, it is tied to the triple point of water. The triple point is the only temperature and pressure combination where ice, liquid water, and water vapor can all coexist. Its temperature is defined as 273.16 K, which is useful because it does not change with pressure the way water’s freezing and boiling points do.

Even with fixed reference points, different thermometers can give slightly different readings for other temperatures. For that reason, scientists need a standard thermometer. Metrologists use the constant-volume gas thermometer for this job. In this device, a gas in a sealed vessel stays at the same volume while temperature changes, and the temperature is found from the change in pressure.

The choice of gas can affect the results a little. However, the less dense the gas in the bulb, the better different gases agree. When the results are extrapolated to zero density, they match well, and zero pressure corresponds to absolute zero. Constant-volume gas thermometers are large and slow to reach equilibrium, so they are mainly used as standards to calibrate other thermometers.
