Thermal Stress

Un cuerpo experimenta estrés cuando se somete a variaciones de temperatura; este estrés se conoce como estrés térmico, que incluso puede deformar permanentemente el cuerpo.
Por ejemplo, se mantiene intencionalmente un espacio entre dos juntas de una varilla en la vía férrea para evitar la deformación o flexión de las varillas.
Para calcular la tensión térmica en un objeto, primero, determine la expansión o contracción térmica, luego calcule la tensión.
Considere una caña de longitud L0.. Cuando se aplica calor, la varilla se expandirá en longitud en delta 'L' y se puede evaluar el cambio fraccional en la longitud de la varilla.
Ahora, la misma varilla se fija a ambos extremos. Cuando se aplica el calor, la varilla experimenta tensión ya que no puede expandirse. Para restaurar la longitud original de la varilla, se puede calcular la tensión.
Recordando la definición del módulo de Young, es la relación entre la tensión y la deformación.
Por lo tanto, el estrés térmico se puede determinar combinando las ecuaciones y reorganizando los términos.

Si la temperatura de un objeto cambia mientras se impide que se expanda o contraiga, el objeto está sujeto a estrés. El estrés es compresivo si el objeto se expande en ausencia de restricción y es de tracción si se contrae. Este estrés resultante del cambio de temperatura se conoce como estrés térmico. Puede ser bastante grande y puede causar daños. Para evitar este estrés, los ingenieros pueden diseñar componentes de manera que puedan expandirse y contraerse libremente. Por ejemplo, en las carreteras, se dejan deliberadamente espacios entre bloques para evitar que se desarrolle el estrés térmico. Cuando no se pueden dejar espacios, los ingenieros deben considerar el estrés térmico en sus diseños. Por lo tanto, las barras de refuerzo en el concreto están hechas de acero porque el coeficiente de expansión lineal del acero es casi igual al del concreto. El estrés térmico puede explicar muchos fenómenos, como la erosión de rocas y pavimentos por la expansión del hielo al congelarse. Thermal stress is the stress that builds up when an object changes temperature but cannot expand or contract freely. If the object would expand without restraint, the stress is compressive. If it would contract, the stress is tensile.

This stress from heating or cooling can become large enough to cause damage. Engineers often reduce it by designing parts so they can move as temperature changes. Highway blocks, for example, are separated by gaps so thermal stress does not build up.

When gaps are not possible, thermal stress must be part of the design. In concrete, the reinforcing rods are made of steel because steel and concrete have nearly the same coefficient of linear expansion. That similarity helps the materials change length at nearly the same rate.

Thermal stress also explains many everyday and natural effects. Ice can weather rocks and pavements as it freezes and expands. Railroad tracks and roadways may buckle on hot days if they do not have enough expansion joints, and power lines can sag more in summer and snap in cold weather if they lack slack.

The same idea helps explain cracks that open and close in plaster walls as a house warms and cools. Glass cooking pans can crack if they cool too fast or unevenly. In each case, different contraction or expansion creates stress in the material.
