Phase Changes

Principalmente hay tres fases diferentes de la materia: sólida, líquida y gaseosa.
Al cambiar la temperatura, un estado cambia a otro. Este fenómeno se llama cambio de fase, que es reversible en la naturaleza.
Al calentarse, un sólido se convierte en líquido, este proceso se denomina fusión, mientras que viceversa se denomina congelación.
El calor absorbido o liberado en esta transición para un material de masa 'm' se puede evaluar utilizando el calor de fusión, que es la energía por unidad de masa requerida o liberada en el cambio de fase.
Del mismo modo, si un líquido se calienta, se convierte en gas, y el proceso se denomina vaporización o ebullición. Al enfriarse, el cambio de un gas en líquido se denomina condensación.
La energía por unidad de masa requerida o liberada en el cambio de fase entre líquido y gas se denomina calor de vaporización, donde Q es el calor absorbido o liberado.
Algunos de los materiales, como el hielo seco, pueden tener directamente una transición de sólido a gas, lo que se denomina sublimación.

Las transiciones de fase juegan un papel teórico y práctico importante en el estudio del flujo de calor. En la fusión o la fundición, un sólido se convierte en un líquido; el proceso opuesto es la congelación. En la evaporación, un líquido se convierte en un gas; el proceso opuesto es la condensación. Una sustancia se derrite o se congela a una temperatura llamada punto de fusión y hierve o se condensa a su punto de ebullición. Estas temperaturas dependen de la presión. La presión alta favorece la forma más densa de la sustancia, por lo que normalmente, la presión alta aumenta el punto de fusión y el punto de ebullición, y la presión baja los disminuye. Por ejemplo, el punto de ebullición del agua es de 100 °C a 1.00 atmósferas. A presiones más altas, el punto de ebullición es más alto, y a presiones más bajas, es más bajo. La principal excepción es la fusión y congelación del agua. La energía involucrada en un cambio de fase depende del número de enlaces o pares de fuerzas y su fuerza. El número de enlaces es proporcional al número de moléculas y, por lo tanto, a la masa de la muestra. La energía por unidad de masa requerida para cambiar una sustancia de la fase sólida a la fase líquida, o liberada cuando la sustancia cambia de líquido a sólido, se conoce como calor de fusión. Heat and phase change energy explain why substances melt, freeze, boil, and condense. A solid turns into a liquid during melting, also called fusion. The reverse process is freezing. A liquid turns into a gas during evaporation. The reverse process is condensation.

Each substance changes phase at specific temperatures. The melting point is the temperature where a substance melts or freezes. The boiling point is the temperature where a substance boils or condenses. These temperatures depend on pressure. In most cases, higher pressure raises the melting point and boiling point because it favors the denser form of the substance. Lower pressure usually lowers them.

Water shows a useful example. At 1.00 atm, water boils at 100 °C. At higher pressures, its boiling point is higher. At lower pressures, its boiling point is lower. Water is also the main exception to the usual pattern for melting and freezing.

Phase changes also involve energy. The amount of energy depends on the number of bonds, or force pairs, and on their strength. Because the number of bonds depends on the number of molecules, the energy needed also depends on the mass of the sample. The energy per unit mass needed to change a solid into a liquid, or released when a liquid becomes a solid, is called the heat of fusion. The energy per unit mass needed to change a liquid into a vapor is called the heat of vaporization.

The latent heat of fusion and the latent heat of vaporization are material constants. They can be measured experimentally. These heats are called latent, or hidden, because energy enters or leaves the system during a phase change without changing the temperature. In that sense, the energy is hidden.
