Mechanisms of Heat Transfer I

Cuando hay un gradiente de temperatura, la transferencia de calor puede ocurrir de tres maneras: conducción, convección y radiación.
La conducción es el proceso en el que el calor se transfiere de una región caliente a una región fría dentro de un objeto, o entre dos objetos en contacto físico.
Por ejemplo, si se coloca una sartén sobre el fuego, el calor se transferirá a la sartén y, finalmente, se calentará.
Además, si un extremo de una cuchara de acero se coloca sobre el fuego, el otro extremo se calienta debido a la transferencia de calor.
En la conducción, las moléculas del lado caliente tienen una energía cinética más alta. Chocan con las moléculas de la región más fría y transfieren energía.
La tasa de transferencia de calor a través de la conducción viene dada por una ecuación que involucra el gradiente de temperatura, el área superficial y el espesor del material a través del cual fluye el calor.
'k' es la conductividad térmica del material, que es alta para los conductores y baja para los aislantes.

Hay tantos procesos que involucran transferencia de calor que es difícil imaginar una situación en la que no ocurra transferencia de calor. Sin embargo, cada transferencia de calor se lleva a cabo solo por tres métodos: conducción, convección y radiación. Heat transfer happens when there is a temperature difference. It can move fast, like through a cooking pan, or slowly, like through the walls of a picnic ice box. Heat transfer appears in many everyday situations, so it is hard to find a place where it does not occur.

There are only three ways heat is transferred: conduction, convection, and radiation. A fireplace shows all three at once. Radiation carries most of the heat into the room. Conduction also moves heat into the room, but much more slowly. Convection happens when cold air enters around the windows and hot air rises up the chimney.

Conduction is heat transfer through stationary matter by direct contact. The matter may look still on a large scale, but atoms and molecules still move because of thermal motion above absolute zero. A stove burner heating the bottom of a pan is a clear example of conduction, and the heat then moves from the pan to the food.
