Arginine Monomers

Arginine monomers are individual molecules of the basic, genetically encoded amino acid arginine, important as building blocks of peptides and proteins and as participants in cellular metabolism. Each monomer contains an α-amino group, a carboxyl group, and a guanidinium-containing side chain; peptide-bond formation links arginine to neighboring amino acids, while the side chain commonly remains positively charged near physiological pH. This charge supports ionic interactions in protein structure and nucleic-acid binding, and arginine residues contribute to enzyme active sites. Free arginine also serves as a substrate in the urea cycle and nitric oxide synthesis, linking protein biochemistry with nitrogen disposal and signaling.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.

Depolymerizable Olefinic Polymers Based on Fused-Ring Cyclooctene Monomers

2022

Here, we describe protocols for the preparation of trans-cyclobutane fused cyclooctenes (tCBCO), their polymerization to prepare depolymerizable olefinic polymers, and the depolymerization of these polymers under mild conditions. Additionally, protocols for the preparation of depolymerizable networks and compression molding of rigid linear plastics based on this system are described.
