Collagen Chitosan Scaffold

Collagen chitosan scaffolds are three-dimensional biomaterial matrices made by combining collagen, an extracellular-matrix protein, with chitosan, a biodegradable polysaccharide, to support cells in engineered tissues. Their performance arises from the complementary properties of both polymers: collagen provides biological recognition sites that promote cell attachment, while chitosan contributes structural support, biodegradability, and interactions with charged biomolecules; processing and crosslinking can further adjust porosity and mechanical stability. In bioengineering, these scaffolds provide temporary frameworks for tissue regeneration, wound repair, and controlled delivery of therapeutic agents, helping researchers study how material structure and composition influence cell behavior and tissue formation.

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

Three-Dimensional Collagen Matrix Scaffold Implantation as a Liver Regeneration Strategy

Liver diseases are induced by many causes that promote fibrosis or cirrhosis. Transplantation is the only option for recovering health. However, given the scarcity of transplantable organs, alternatives must be explored. Our research proposes the implantation of collagen scaffolds in liver tissue from an animal model.
