Collagen Neutralization

Collagen neutralization is the adjustment of an acidic collagen solution toward physiological pH to create a stable material for bioengineering applications. Adding a calculated amount of base, often together with a buffer, raises the pH and promotes collagen molecules to assemble into fibrils as the solution warms, forming a three-dimensional hydrogel. This process controls gelation time, network structure, and the material’s mechanical and biological properties. Neutralized collagen hydrogels provide cell-compatible scaffolds for tissue engineering, three-dimensional cell culture, wound repair research, and the study of extracellular matrix behavior.
