Immune Response Assessment

Immune response assessment is the systematic measurement of how immune cells, tissues, or organisms react to a stimulus, providing evidence of biological compatibility and inflammation. In bioengineering, researchers combine assays that quantify cytokines and antibodies with analyses of immune-cell phenotypes, activation, proliferation, or cytotoxicity under defined experimental conditions. These measurements help evaluate biomaterials, implants, tissue-engineered constructs, and drug-delivery systems by revealing whether they trigger, suppress, or regulate immune activity. Careful assessment supports the design of safer medical technologies, clarifies mechanisms of host-material interactions, and guides the development of therapies that achieve effective function without harmful immune complications.

Humoral Immune Responses

2019

Overview The humoral immune response, also known as the antibody-mediated immune response, targets pathogens circulating in “humors,” or extracellular fluids, such as blood and lymph. Antibodies target invading pathogens for destruction via multiple defense mechanisms, including neutralization, opsonization, and activation of the complement system. Patients that are impaired in the production of antibodies suffer from severe and frequent infections by common pathogens and unusual pathogens. B...

Source: Zhang, J., et al. P. Dissecting Innate Immune Signaling in Viral Evasion of Cytokine Production. J. Vis. Exp. (2014)This video demonstrates intranasal delivery of murine herpesvirus in mice to induce a lung-specific immune response. Lung tissue is subsequently processed to obtain cytokine-containing supernatants for downstream assessment of host immune responses.

A Technique to Assess the Immune Response against an Antigen by Inducing Skin Inflammation

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique to assess a test antigen by inducing skin inflammation in a murine model. The test antigen—a hapten in an oil/acetone solution—is topically applied to the skin of the mouse ear, and inflammation of the skin is assessed after an adequate period.
