Kidney Cortex Ecm

Kidney cortex extracellular matrix (ECM) is the structural and signaling network surrounding renal cells in the cortex, where it helps organize tissue architecture and support kidney function. Composed of proteins such as collagens, glycoproteins, and proteoglycans, the ECM regulates cell adhesion, migration, and behavior through integrin-mediated signaling and biochemical or mechanical cues. In bioengineering, kidney cortex ECM can guide the design of decellularized scaffolds, engineered tissues, organoids, and kidney-on-chip models that better reproduce native cellular environments. These systems support studies of renal development and disease while advancing strategies for tissue repair, drug testing, and regenerative medicine.

2018

Here we present a protocol to fabricate a kidney cortex extracellular matrix-derived hydrogel to retain the native kidney extracellular matrix (ECM) structural and biochemical composition. The fabrication process and its applications are described. Finally, a perspective on using this hydrogel to support kidney-specific cellular and tissue regeneration and bioengineering is discussed.

Kidney Structure

2019

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...
